Is Viagra Prescription-Only in Australia?

Summary

Every erectile dysfunction tablet sold in Australia is prescription-only. Here is why, how to get a script in person or by telehealth, and what the rules are if you import it yourself.

In short

Yes. Sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis), vardenafil and avanafil are all Schedule 4 prescription-only medicines in Australia. You can get a prescription from a GP in person or through a telehealth consult, and it is also required if you import ED medicine for yourself under the TGA Personal Importation Scheme.

On this page

Yes. In Australia every erectile dysfunction tablet is prescription-only: sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis), vardenafil (Levitra) and avanafil. That's true at a chemist, through an online pharmacy, and when you import medicine for yourself.

Plenty of people search for a way around this, and plenty of websites are happy to suggest there is one. There isn't a lawful one. The good news is that getting a script is quicker and less awkward than most men expect.

Why ED medicine needs a prescription

All four ED medicines are listed in Schedule 4 of the Poisons Standard, the category for medicines that need a doctor's (or nurse practitioner's) assessment. Pharmacy groups have asked the TGA several times since 2017 to move sildenafil to pharmacist-only, as the UK did. The TGA has said no each time, most recently in late 2024. Its reasoning has been consistent:

  • Interactions can be dangerous. Sildenafil and nitrate heart medicines together can drop blood pressure to a dangerous level.
  • ED is often a symptom. Erectile difficulty can be an early sign of high blood pressure, diabetes or heart disease. A consult is a chance to catch those.
  • The right medicine varies. Kidney or liver problems, other medicines and heart health all change what's suitable.

Three ways to get a prescription

1. Your regular GP

The simplest option if you have one. A standard consult covers it, and your GP already knows your history and medicines. A Medicare rebate applies to the consult itself.

2. A telehealth consult

Many Australian doctors prescribe ED medicine by phone or video. Some are GP clinics you already use; others are online services that charge a private fee. Medicare rebates for telehealth come with conditions, usually that you have seen the practice before, so check what you'll pay before you book.

Expect questions about:

  • heart conditions, chest pain and blood pressure
  • every medicine you take, especially anything for angina
  • how long the problem has been going on, and whether it's consistent

3. A sexual health or men's health clinic

Useful if you would rather not raise it with your usual GP, or if there's more than one issue to talk through.

What you get: eScripts and repeats

Most prescriptions are now eScripts, a QR code sent by SMS or email. Any Australian pharmacy can dispense from it, including online ones. Your doctor decides the quantity and whether to include repeats. Our guide on repeat prescriptions explains how refills work.

ED medicines aren't subsidised on the PBS for erectile dysfunction, so you pay the full private price. Prices vary a lot between sellers, as covered in why ED medicine prices vary. Generic sildenafil, tadalafil and vardenafil cost a fraction of the original brands.

If you import ED medicine yourself

Some Australians buy generic brands such as Kamagra or Cenforce from overseas suppliers under the TGA's Personal Importation Scheme. The rules are specific:

  • You need a valid Australian prescription for a prescription-only medicine, before you import it.
  • Each order is limited to three months' supply, and no more than 15 months' supply in a 12-month period.
  • The medicine is for you or your immediate family only, and should stay in its original packaging.
  • The TGA doesn't assess products imported this way, so their quality isn't guaranteed.

Ignoring the rules has real consequences. Imported parcels can be seized at the border, and the TGA has issued infringement notices to individuals for importing prescription-only ED medicine. Our legal status guide covers this route in more detail.

Red flags when buying ED medicine online

A seller is cutting corners if it:

  • says no prescription is needed, or offers to "skip" it
  • offers a "free online assessment" that is only a tick-box quiz with no doctor behind it
  • claims a brand that isn't on the ARTG has been assessed by the TGA
  • has no Australian contact details or business identity

The TGA warns that sexual-health products sold this way may be counterfeit or contain undeclared ingredients. Our checklist on what to check before buying Kamagra online goes through it point by point.

The short version

You need a prescription for every ED medicine in Australia. A GP or telehealth doctor can usually sort it out in one short consult, and that consult is also a free health check you probably needed anyway. Once you have the script, compare options across the erectile dysfunction range, or read up on each active ingredient: sildenafil, tadalafil and vardenafil. Healthdirect can help you find a GP or after-hours service near you.

Frequently asked questions

Can you buy Viagra over the counter in Australia?+

No. Sildenafil is a Schedule 4 prescription-only medicine. The TGA has considered making it available from pharmacists without a prescription several times since 2017 and has rejected it each time, most recently in late 2024.

Can I get an ED prescription online?+

Yes. A registered Australian doctor can assess you and prescribe by telehealth, by phone or video. The prescription is usually sent as an eScript, a token by SMS or email that any pharmacy can dispense.

Is Cialis prescription-only in Australia too?+

Yes. Tadalafil (Cialis), vardenafil (Levitra) and avanafil are all Schedule 4, the same as sildenafil.

Do I need a prescription to import ED medicine for personal use?+

Yes. Under the TGA Personal Importation Scheme you need a valid Australian prescription for any prescription-only medicine, and each order is limited to three months' supply, with no more than 15 months' supply in a 12-month period.

Is Viagra on the PBS?+

Not for erectile dysfunction. Sildenafil is PBS-subsidised only under strict criteria for pulmonary arterial hypertension, so ED prescriptions are private scripts and you pay the full price.
