Summary

Kamagra is an Indian-made brand of sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra. Here is who makes it, the formats it comes in, how it works, and where it stands under Australian law.

In short

Kamagra is a brand of sildenafil citrate, the same active ingredient as Viagra, made by Ajanta Pharma in India. It comes as tablets, oral jelly, chewable and effervescent forms. In Australia sildenafil is a Schedule 4 prescription-only medicine, and the Kamagra brand is not on the ARTG.

On this page

Kamagra is a brand name for sildenafil citrate, the same active ingredient that is in Viagra. It is made in India by Ajanta Pharma and sold in more formats than Viagra ever was: standard tablets, a gel-like oral jelly in single sachets, chewable tablets and tablets that dissolve in water.

That one sentence answers most of the question. The rest of this guide fills in what people usually want to know next: who makes it, how the formats differ, how sildenafil actually works, and why you won't find Kamagra on the shelf at an Australian chemist.

Who makes Kamagra

Kamagra is manufactured by Ajanta Pharma Limited, a listed pharmaceutical company based in Mumbai. Ajanta makes a wide range of branded generics for markets across Asia and Africa, and Kamagra is one of its best-known exports. We cover the company and its manufacturing in more depth in who makes Kamagra.

Because Kamagra is a well-known name, it is also one of the most copied. The TGA has repeatedly warned that sexual-health products sold online outside the ARTG may be counterfeit or contain ingredients that aren't on the label. Buying a product with "Kamagra" printed on it tells you what it is meant to be, not what it is.

The active ingredient: sildenafil

Sildenafil belongs to a group of medicines called PDE5 inhibitors. During arousal, the body releases nitric oxide, which relaxes the smooth muscle in the blood vessels of the penis so more blood can flow in. An enzyme called PDE5 normally winds that process down. Sildenafil blocks the enzyme, so the relaxation lasts longer and an erection is easier to get and keep.

Two things follow from that mechanism, and both surprise people:

  • It needs arousal to do anything. Sildenafil supports a response that has already started. It isn't an on-switch.
  • It doesn't change desire. If low libido is the problem rather than erections, sildenafil isn't the answer, and a GP is the right first stop.

The same mechanism explains the most serious safety rule. Sildenafil lowers blood pressure a little on its own. Combined with nitrate medicines, often prescribed for angina, it can drop blood pressure to a dangerous level. That interaction is why a prescriber asks about heart medicines before anything else.

The Kamagra range at a glance

  • Kamagra tablets: film-coated tablets, made in 50mg and 100mg strengths. The standard option for anyone who is fine swallowing a tablet.
  • Kamagra Oral Jelly: 100mg of sildenafil in a flavoured gel, packed in single sachets. Made for people who find tablets hard to swallow.
  • Kamagra Effervescent: a tablet that dissolves in a glass of water, for people who would rather drink it.
  • Kamagra Polo and Kamagra Chewable: chewable tablets that need no water at all.
  • Super Kamagra: sildenafil combined with dapoxetine. A different product, aimed at two problems at once.

The sildenafil inside is the same in each. The differences are about how it's taken and how it tastes, not what it does. Super Kamagra is the exception: it adds dapoxetine, a separate medicine used for premature ejaculation, and it brings its own side effects and interactions. Our Super Kamagra vs Kamagra guide explains the difference, and Kamagra Oral Jelly vs tablets compares the two most popular formats.

The amount to take, and when, is set by the prescriber and the patient leaflet in the pack. We don't give dosing advice on this site.

Is Kamagra the same as Viagra?

Same active ingredient, different everything else. Viagra is Pfizer's original brand and is registered on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG). Kamagra is an Indian brand that has never been through the TGA's assessment. Fillers, coatings, flavours and manufacturing standards differ, and so does the paper trail behind each batch. There's a fuller comparison in is Kamagra the same as Viagra.

Where Kamagra stands in Australia

Two separate facts decide this, and sellers tend to blur them:

  1. Sildenafil is a Schedule 4 Prescription Only Medicine. That applies to every brand. The TGA has looked at proposals to make sildenafil available from pharmacists without a script several times since 2017, and rejected each one, most recently in late 2024.
  2. The Kamagra brand is not on the ARTG. So Australian pharmacies don't stock it. That's covered in why Kamagra isn't sold in Australian chemists.

The lawful route for an individual is the TGA's Personal Importation Scheme, which still needs a valid Australian prescription and limits each order to three months' supply. Our legal status guide walks through it step by step.

Before you consider it

A short GP or telehealth appointment does more than produce a script. Erectile difficulty is sometimes the first sign of something worth catching early, such as high blood pressure, diabetes or heart disease, and a doctor will check the medicines you already take for interactions.

If you have a prescription and want to compare products, the full erectile dysfunction range lists every format with its active ingredient. For independent information on sildenafil itself, healthdirect and the TGA are the places to check.
