Vidalista Black 80 and Professional

The Vidalista range uses descriptive words alongside its numbers, and two of them — "Black" and "Professional" — attract a great deal of search traffic. Both are frequently read as implying something clinical. Neither does.

Tadalafil, the active ingredient across the Vidalista range, is a Schedule 4 prescription-only medicine in Australia. Lawful supply requires a prescription from a registered Australian prescriber, and the Therapeutic Goods Administration prohibits advertising prescription-only medicines directly to consumers. How the range is named

Three elements combine in these product names:

• The brand — Vidalista, a Centurion Laboratories brand for tadalafil products.
• A number — the labelled strength, in milligrams, of tadalafil declared for each unit.
• A word — a manufacturer's designation for a variant, describing presentation or trade dress.

Only the first two carry defined meaning. The third is naming convention, and it is not standardised across the industry.

What "Black" designates

Vidalista Black 80 pairs the word Black with the number 80. The number is the labelled strength of tadalafil. The word is a manufacturer's variant designation, typically corresponding to the product's trade dress.

It is worth being blunt here: "Black" does not denote a clinical category, a regulatory classification, a purity grade or a professional-only supply route. There is also a separate Vidalista 80 in the range, which is why reading the full composition statement on the pack rather than the name matters.

What "Professional" designates

Vidalista Professional uses Professional to designate a sublingual presentation — a tablet formulated to be placed under the tongue rather than swallowed whole. Sublingual presentations exist across many drug classes because the mucosa under the tongue is thin and well supplied with blood vessels.

As with "Black", the word is a manufacturer's designation. It does not mean the product is restricted to health professionals, that it is a higher grade, or that it has any regulatory standing that other products lack.

Why the number is the important part

Across the range — Vidalista 20, Vidalista 40, Vidalista 60 and the higher-numbered variants — the number is a labelling declaration of active ingredient content. It is descriptive.

Which labelled strength is appropriate for an individual is a clinical judgement made by a prescriber who knows your cardiovascular history, your other medicines, and your kidney and liver function. What changes and what does not, across variants

Changes between variants:

• Presentation — a sublingual tablet is physically and formulationally different from a swallowed tablet.
• Excipients — binders, coatings, colourings and flavourings differ, which matters for allergies and intolerances.
• Labelled strength — where the number differs.

Does not change:

• The active ingredient — tadalafil throughout.
• The prescription requirement — Schedule 4 attaches to the molecule.
• The contraindications and interactions.
• The urgent warning signs.
• The need for a proper medical assessment.

The contraindications, identical across the range

• Nitrates are an absolute contraindication. Glyceryl trinitrate sprays, patches and tablets, isosorbide products and the recreational inhalants known as poppers must never be combined with a PDE5 inhibitor. The combination can cause a sudden, severe and potentially life-threatening drop in blood pressure.
• Riociguat is contraindicated.
• Alpha-blockers, often prescribed for prostate symptoms or blood pressure, require careful medical management.
• Significant cardiovascular disease — recent heart attack or stroke, unstable angina, uncontrolled blood pressure, certain arrhythmias — must be assessed by a doctor, because sexual activity places demand on the heart.
• Inherited retinal conditions and significant liver or kidney impairment need to be raised before anything is prescribed.

Some antifungals, some antibiotics and HIV protease inhibitors can alter tadalafil levels. Give your prescriber and pharmacist a complete list of everything you take.

Urgent signs

Seek urgent medical care for chest pain during or after sexual activity, an erection lasting more than four hours, or sudden loss or reduction of vision or sudden hearing loss or ringing. Tell any treating team that a PDE5 inhibitor is involved, because it rules out nitrates as an emergency treatment.

Checking the pack

Because variant names are not standardised, the composition statement is your source of truth. A legitimate pack names the active ingredient and its labelled strength, identifies the manufacturer with an address, and carries a batch number with manufacturing and expiry dates. Blister foil should be intact and the batch details on the strip should match the carton exactly. If a pack uses a variant word but does not spell out its composition, stop and ask a pharmacist.
